- Description: Anxiety that arrives from nowhere in your 40s has a cause. It isn't you.

| You were always the calm one. The one who handled the crisis while everyone else panicked. The one people called. Now your chest tightens in the supermarket queue for no reason. You check the stove twice. You lie awake rehearsing a conversation that will never happen. Nothing is wrong, and that is the strange part. Your body is sounding an alarm and you cannot find the fire. It's not your personality changing. It's the hormones that kept your alarm quiet starting to leave. ▬ What is actually happeningYour brain has a threat detector called the amygdala. Estrogen helps keep it in proportion. It supports serotonin, which tells that detector to stand down.Progesterone has its own role. Your body turns it into a compound that works on GABA, the brain's main braking system. In perimenopause, both hormones swing hard before they fall. The brake slips, and the detector fires at things that never used to register. ▬ What the research shows1.6xmore likely to report high anxiety during and after perimenopause, among women who had low anxiety before it. The calm ones. Not the worriers.2,956 women followed for ten years. Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN). Menopause, 2013. So when someone tells you that you have always been a bit anxious, you can tell them the data disagrees. This is new. It has a cause. ▬ What to do tomorrow01Breathe out longer than you breathe inWhen the tightness arrives: in for four, out for eight. A long exhale is a direct line to the nervous system that calms your heart rate. Five rounds, wherever you are. Nobody needs to know.02Move your last coffee before noonCaffeine stays in your system for hours. It produces the same signals your alarm is already firing: a faster heart, a tighter chest.03Name itSay it in your head, plainly. This is hormonal. Nothing is actually wrong. Naming a feeling turns the alarm down instead of feeding it. If the anxiety comes with chest pain, fainting, or panic that stops you functioning, see a doctor. That is not something to tough out. The rest is your brain recalibrating without a manual. You did not lose your nerve. You lost the chemistry that was quietly holding it for you. |
