- Description: The fog in perimenopause is real, it is measurable, and the research says it lifts.

| You walk into the kitchen and stand there. You came in for something. It is gone. You read the same paragraph of an email three times and still could not tell anyone what it said. The new software at work, the one your younger colleagues picked up in a day, still feels like wading through sand. You have started to quietly wonder if this is the beginning of something worse. It isn't. It's your brain learning on a weaker signal for a while, and the research shows it recovers. ▬ What is actually happeningEstrogen supports the parts of your brain that handle new learning and memory, including the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex. It helps neurons connect and helps those regions use energy. In perimenopause, estrogen does not fade smoothly. It spikes and crashes. The brain is working with an unreliable supply of something it has relied on for thirty years. The result is not lost intelligence. It is slower uptake. New information takes more repetitions to stick, and holding several things in mind at once costs more effort than it used to. ▬ What the research shows7%Normally, scores rise each time you retake a memory test, because you learn it. In late perimenopause, women's gains in verbal memory were only 7 percent as large as before the transition. After menopause, learning bounced back.Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN), 2,362 women followed for four years. Neurology, 2009. That last part matters most. The dip was temporary. The women did not lose the ability to learn. They lost it for a stretch, and then it came back. ▬ What to do tomorrowYou are not getting worse. You are running on a temporary handicap. Work around it.01Stop holding things in your headWrite it down the moment you think it. A notebook in your pocket, a list on your phone. Every item you take out of your working memory frees space for the thing in front of you.02One task at a timeClose the other tabs. Put the phone in another room for forty minutes. Multitasking costs this brain more than it used to, so stop paying that cost.03Move before you thinkA brisk twenty-minute walk before demanding work. Aerobic exercise increases blood flow to the brain and is one of the best-supported habits for memory in the research. If memory problems are getting steadily worse, affect your safety (like leaving the stove on), or worry the people around you, see a doctor. Thyroid problems, low B12, and depression can also cause fog and are worth ruling out. You are not losing your mind. You are learning on a weaker signal, and the signal comes back. |
